Okay, I always say that “Saving Money” is all I care about. For God’s sake, these shop owners charge us damn too much for a glass of “low quality” hot chocolate. But enough!✋ Because, below are steps with pictures that you can follow to make and customize your own HOT CHOCOLATE.

Let’s get started

INGREDIENTS

1) Milk (Any milk at all, that you like. I used Almond Milk.)

2) Semi-sweet dark chocolate chips

3) Vanilla Essence or Vanilla Extract

4) Espresso powder

5) Amaretto Di Saronno 

6) Whipped Cream or Marshmallows 

To begin, using a medium saucepan, heat the milk and espresso powder on low heat until you start seeing little bubbles around the edges of the pan. (Please don’t allow the milk to boil) 
Pour the chocolate chips, vanilla and disaronno into the milk and be stirring from time to time, until all the chocolate chips melt. Off the fire and serve 
Traditionally, plenty of whipped cream is used for Hot Chocolate topping. But personally, I prefer a giant pile of marshmallows.
I made this for a friend and I. She requested whipped cream for her topping, so I did just that. If you look at my friend’s glass, you will see that I dusted little espresso powder on the whipped cream. I wanted to use cinnamon powder, but she refused. And as for me, I simply enjoyed mine with marshmallows. The reason I prefer making my own hot chocolate is because, I get to control the amount of ingredients I use. There is no sugar, no syrup, and it’s affordable.

      Aww baby?? I used chocolate chips from Dr. Oetker and chocolate chips from Trumps. I bought the “Dr. Oetker” from Amigo Supermarket and Trumps from Shoprite. Go to my twitter to see the images of them both

    You said to use any milk I like. Can I use skimmed milk, if I run out of whole milk?

      Yes of course. You can use any milk at all. Skimmed/Coconut/Soya/butter… Any milk

    Hey Hadiza! I see you said I can use Vanilla Essence or Extract. What’s the difference? Are they not the same?

      Cynthia! Long time! Yes your question. Vanilla essence is not vanilla extract. They are different. Essence is made artificially and the vanilla flavour doesn’t come out that much. Extract is the real thing. It’s gotten from the vanilla beans. So the flavour is usually very strong. If you use Essence in a recipe that says to use Extract, you will miss it. Because essence doesn’t have that strong aroma. It’s there like it’s not there. You understand?

      Yes why not. You can even use white chocolate chips. You can also even use peanut butter chips. Yeah!

    And the Italian liquor. Is it optional? What’s the need for it?

      Khadee the liqueur is very optional. Many people use Amaretto or Booze, because of the flavor they have. Amaretto Disaronno is very mild and it has an Almond flavour. It is safe, it’s used for most bakings

      Amaretto has a nice almond flavour. So a lot people use it or booze because of that. But it’s very optional

    Also please do include the quantity of ingredients needed, like d espresso powder, how much of it do i need?

      Yes that’s true. The thing is it depends on the quantity. If its fir just one glass, don’t use more than a teaspoon. I didn’t put the amount. But in the pictures, you can see the quantity. Amaretto/Vanilla also shouldn’t be more 1 tablespoon

    Hadiza, if essence doesn’t have the vanilla aroma like extract. Why did you use it? Why not extract to give you everything

      Lol. Because Amaretto has an almond flavour that I love so much. If I used vanilla extract, I would have killed down the almond because it’s very strong. If I used Extract, I wouldn’t have used Amaretto

    As someone who likes hot chocolate a lot, I’m going to try this. Only problem is I don’t know where to get epresso powder in Ilorin and I don’t think they have in shoprite.
